Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday it has no information about Bulgarian officials having been denied access to the United States over suspected involvement in corruption.

The ministry said in a statement it had asked the US side to elaborate on media reports, in which Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Hoyt Yee was quoted as saying on Tuesday that the US had imposed a visa and travel ban on former and current Romanian and Bulgarian officials suspected of corruption. According to the media reports, Hoyt Yee had said this during a hearing at the Committee on Foreign Affairs at the US House of Representatives.

“The US side stated that every application for a visa is being considered strictly individually and is confidential under the current legislation,” the statement read.

“Due to this and other reasons related to US regulations, the US is unable to provide information to the Foreign Ministry about Bulgarian citizens, including current or former representatives of official Bulgarian bodies, who had been denied visa or access to US territory on grounds of suspected participation in activities linked to corruption practices”

According to Bulgarian media reports dating back to 2011, the US Embassy in Sofia has denied visas to high-ranking Bulgarian government officials, members of security services and influential businessmen.
