Bulgaria: Bulgaria Engineering Union Refutes 'Suspended Cooperation' Claims

The Bulgarian engineering union has received no open letter from its Russian counterpart in which the latter declines cooperation.

Asked by Novinite to comment, Iliya Keleshev, who heads the Bulgarian Branch Chamber - Machine Building, has denied reports which emerged earlier on Thursday that cooperation between the two bodies will not be sealed due to Bulgaria's support for sanctions on Russia.

The information first appeared on Russian news agency TASS, with an article claiming that just days ahead of a May 26 bilateral business forum in Moscow, Soyuzmash finds it "inappropriate" to sign a cooperation agreement.

"The possibility for the signing of the [Cooperation] Agreement to take place in Moscow has been discussed, but the Russian side has declined our proposal," Keleshev has said.

"The information we have is that [Soyuzmash] will hold on to its initial plan about signing the Agreement [that was put forward] last year."

Under those arrangements, Mr Keleshev says, the document is to be signed in the autumn, when "the joint intergovernmental commission for economic, scientific and technological development" is to take place in Sofia.

He is referring to a Bulgarian-Russian commission meeting which is due in October, according to a Bulgarian MP who says that in 2015 Sofia and Moscow will hold a first meeting of this kind in the past four years.
