The Supreme Administrative Court (VAS) has overturned a government decree which set the minimum wage in the country at BGN 360-380.
Under a decision dating last year, as of January 1, 2015 the amount rose to BGN 360 (up by BGN 20 compared to 2014) and was to grow by another BGN 20, to BGN 380, on July 1.
But three of the largest business unions in the country announced back then they would appeal.
According to the Bulgarian Industrial Capital Association (BICA), the Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA), and the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), the government failed to hold mandatory consultations.
Prior to taking the step the government is obliged to hold meetings under the framework of the National Council for Tripartite Cooperation (NCTC), a body that brings together the government, businesses and workers' unions.
This is also the reason pointed by the VAS judge panel which ruled in favor of the business associations.
The court's ruling can be appealed within two weeks.
The Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria (CEIBG, recently also using its Bulgarian acronym KRIB).
However, KRIB also joined earlier this year a call by all major businesses' associations to boost the NCTC role which, in their words, the government has turned into an "useless" and "non-functioning" body.
