MEP Sergey Stanishev, who heads the Party of European Socialists (PES), is now officially running for a second term, a recent post on Facebook has suggested.

Stanishev has used his profile to remind that he will take part in the election that is to be held in Budapest on June 12-13, at a congress of his party.

"We all feel that Europe is entering a new period. The philosophy and policy of neo-liberalism, which has dominated since the 1980s has produced the deepest and most devastating economic, social and political crisis for decades. We need Europe of economic development which creates jobs and decent income for the people," his post reads, also offering a link to a resume of his motivation letter which he sent to the party leadership.

It contains ideas about how the visibility and influence of PES can be boosted through reform.

Earlier in May, the center-left Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) moved to raise the candidacy of former EU Parliament President Enrique Bar?n Crespo to run against Stanishev.

PSOE pointed out that Bar?n Crespo, 71, enjoys much "prestige" among social democrats and could help raise the profile of PES among EU voters.

Stanishev was Bulgaria's PM between 2005 and 2009, and his party, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) which he headed until last July, was the senior partner in Bulgaria's previous elected government between 2013 and 2014.
