Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova assured on Thursday that Bulgaria was functioning as a member of the Schengen Area and everyone in Europe was of the opinion that Bulgaria has fulfilled the technical requirements for accession to the borderless area.

Bachvarova admitted that the main argument and concern of the sceptics towards our accession was the example with Greece, private NOVA TV reports.

The minister said that Bulgaria could neither bear the blame nor give explanations for this, but usually it was admitted that the decision at the time had not been well-thought-out and there was fear of repeating past mistakes.

Luxembourg, which is to chair the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of the year, had firm determination for solving the issue on Bulgarian accession to the Schengen Area until the end of the year.

One of the other deputy prime ministers, Meglena Kuneva, said that one of the reasons for starting more active work on Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen Area were the serious changes in the area of security.

In her words, Bulgaria has demonstrated its commitment to the EU in many critical moments.

Kuneva explained that the aim was to attract a maximum number of countries in support of Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen Area.

The deputy prime minister highlighted that Germany admitted Bulgarian efforts and was expecting the implementation of concrete measures.

Sweden and France similarly supported Bulgarian efforts and called on other countries to take them into account.

Kuneva revealed that as a first step, Bulgaria requested the lifting of the air borders.
