Bulgaria’s parliamentary Budget and Finance Committee will review Thursday a proposal for changes to the Customs Act.

The changes are to allow customs officers to conduct operative and search activities, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.

The step means that customs officers will have access to the information system of the Interior Ministry, which, however, will be limited to data related to the subject of investigation.

Besides, Customs Agency officials will be authorized to conduct convoy activities on the territory of the country for people detained for up to 72 hours.

They will also be allowed to carry out search activities.

The legal changes also stipulate that an appeal procedure will no longer stop the execution of enforceable decisions of the Customs Agency.

The legal amendments step up the requirements for appointment and promotion of Customs Agency staff.

Upon starting a new job, every official will have to undergo professional and psychological tests and this will happen every time they get promoted.

Customs officers will also be made to submit property declarations not only upon starting a job at the Customs Agency but upon leaving the system too.
