Nigel Farage has announced he is quitting as leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) after failing to become MP for the South Thanet.

Even though UKIP won nearly four million votes in Thursday’s general election – more than the Scottish National Party (SNP) and Liberal Democrats put together – and became the country’s third biggest political party, it will have just two of the 650 seats in Parliament because of the UK’s ‘first past the post’ electoral system.

"I said I would stand down if I didn’t win and I’m a man of my word, I don’t break my word," Farage said at a news conference.

He, however, left the door open for return, saying there would be a UKIP election in the summer, and that he would take time out from politics to consider whether he would put himself forward as a candidate.
