The Foreign Ministry has no official information on Bulgarian citizens, who were aboard the cargo ship, which was seized in Iran on Tuesday.

This was announced by the spokesperson of the ministry Betina Zhoteva in an interview for private NOVA TV on Wednesday.

As soon as the information emerged, the Bulgarian ambassador to Iran contacted all competent Iranian authorities, but there has been no official confirmation of Bulgarians aboard the seized ship.

The Bulgarian ambassador in Tehran is in a constant contact with Iranian authorities and his colleagues from the other embassies, who are similarly checking information on detained citizens from their respective countries.

According to the Iranian official news agency, the ship was seized after the border patrol noticed something suspicious aboard the vessels, while other sources say that the ship was confiscated due to outstanding debts.

Zhoteva did not see anything worrying and she did not expect that there will be some serious problems with the ship, which should be released soon.

Information of the seized cargo ship Maersk Tigris, which was sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, emerged on Tuesday.

The ship was seized in the Strait of Hormuz with media reporting that citizens of Bulgaria, Myanmar, Romania and the UK aboard the vessel were detained.

There has been also information that the captain of the ship was Bulgarian, but this has been neither confirmed nor dismissed.
