Winter Tourism: 1.8 Million Visit Bulgaria
Bulgaria has witnessed a bustling winter tourism season, with a total of 1.8 million tourists gracing its picturesque landscapes from December 1 to March 25
It is not a sustainable political decision for us to be closing our eyes for the conflicts that have arisen due to the interests of the great powers, the spheres of influence and their peripheries.
The statement was made by Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev during his speech at the Third Global Forum taking place in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, as reported by the institutional press office.
Representatives of over 60 countries are present at the event, among which are 40 current and former heads of state and more than 200 high representatives of international organizations and government leaders.
He added that crisis situations around the globe have reached a record number and that in itself requires immediate action in order to avoid entering '' the dangerous grey area of illegitimacy and instability''.
The head of state pointed out that no nation can cope with the pressures alone, regardless of the size of its economy and military powers.
''Cooperation is no longer a matter of choice but of necessity,'' Bulgarian President stated. He elaborated that the world should avoid a situation where great powers will once again be fighting over particular spheres of influence.
''The decisiveness of European leaders who believed in their historical mission of not allowing a subsequent devastation has created the EU. In its name enemies became friends, working alongside for a common future of peace and shared values.''
He drew the example of the Balkans - a territory largely considered to have been Europe's ''burial ground'', and now is a peaceful region.
President Plevneliev also noted the growing number of frozen conflicts that are posing severe challenges over global order and further expressed his fear that Eastern Ukraine could easily become a zone of the next ''frozen conflict''.
In his words, it should not be allowed for countries and people to be kept unstable and dependent on the ''interests of one or the other great power that has decided that a given country is in the periphery of its influence''.
He added that on account of the crisis in Ukraine, Europe will be entering a new phase of ''cold peace'' in Europe.
''Peace, because nobody wants war and nobody would like to go back to the times of the Cold War. But this is a cold peace, as Russia and the West, unfortunately, even today are opposed to each other, while the EU is trying to remain unified on the imposition of sanctions,'' stated Plevneliev. '' The EU is a unique project for peace where the led by consensus policies make every country equally important. I am hoping that we will be seeing global interests on the global stage that will reflect the leading principles and values of the world order, as opposed to destroy them.''
Bulgarian President further expressed his alarm by the new wave of nationalism that has been taking over Europe, taking advantage of the fears of people, connected to emigration, lack of economic perspective, high unemployment rates and many more.
''Today we need peaceful patriotism more than ever, but not nationalism,'' he added.
Among the biggest challenges for the global community pointed out by him were climate change, migration, terrorism and threats on national security.
''We are currently facing the challenges rising from the unlearned lessons of history and of the wrongful interpretation and even manipulation of history,'' said Plevneliev.
