The UN Children's Fund has opened a first of its kind Children and Youth Zone in Bulgaria's Sliven.

Activities of the new center will be mainly aimed at helping children that have had problems with authorities, vulnerable youth and children at risk. They will be provided with psycho-social assistance, various educational activities and further support of any kind. IKEA sponsored the center by donating furniture and all equipment necessary for the charity project.

''We in UNICEF believe that every child comes to the world with its own potential,'' stated Ms Tanya Radochay, representative of UNICEF for Bulgaria. ''It is therefore useful for the personalities, as well as for the family and the whole community for them to develop their full potential. With the opening of a Children and Youth Zone in Sliven, we will be helping teenagers aged between 10 and 18 to get a second chance.''

A number of distinguished guests attended the opening ceremony, including Bulgaria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Municipal Director of Sliven, Dimitar Syarov, Ms Eva Zhecheva, Chair of the State Agency for Child Protection and many others.

Sliven in fact happens to be one of the regions in Bulgaria where the UN Children's Fund has been working most intensively. The reason is the fact that the town has one of the biggest numbers of children in the region - 45 000. It, however, also has the biggest concentration of problems and challenges for youth development - high percentage of child mortality, early pregnancy and school dropout rate.
