Bulgaria's Consultative Council for National Security is to hold a session on Monday to discuss the current security environment and the state of the Bulgarian Armed Forces.

Called by President Rosen Plevneliev last week, it involves Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and ministers holding the Interior (Rumyana Bachvarova) and Defense (Nikolay Nenchev) portfolios.

A report titled State of the Armed Forces and Perspectives for their Development is to be read out by Nenchev.

The Defense Ministry, alongside Plevneliev himself, insist the government should set aside additional funding for the army to boost military expenditure and give way to its gradual increase to 2% over the coming years. Plevneliev took on that commitment at last year's NATO summit in Wales.

Under Bulgaria's constitution it also includes leaders of all parliamentary groups, army chiefs and heads of security services. All top officials from leading institutions related to security and defense also attend gatherings.

Deputy PM Meglena Kuneva, who oversees the security portfolios, is also invited to talks.

The councils begins at 10:00 EEST at the Presidency in Sofia, Bulgaria.
