Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Rosselkhoznadzor has banned the re-export of crop products from Bulgaria as of April 25.

Julia Shvabauskene, Head of the Rosselkhoznadzor Administration for Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast, told Interfax that similar decisions could be adopted for other EU Member States, according to reports of the BGNES news agency.

She pointed out that the decision on Bulgaria was the first step towards strengthening control over supplies, adding that the ban on re-export could be extended to all EU countries if the European colleagues failed to respond to the situation and to understand the reasons for all that was happening.

Shvabauskene argued that the decision had been adopted over suspicions of counterfeit Bulgarian re-export certificates.

She said that Rosselkhoznadzor could not confirm the origin of apples which had allegedly been delivered to Russia from China, Brazil and Morocco.

Russia has reportedly requested urgent consultation with Bulgaria over the matter.
