UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highlighted on Thursday the gravity of the situation in Yemen and called for an immediate ceasefire by all parties to the conflict.
This comes as Jamal Benomar, the Special Adviser to the Secretary General on Yemen, announced his resignation from the position, the news centre of UN informs.
Benomar expressed an interest to move to another assignment after spending the past four years working closely with the Yemenis on securing their democratic aspirations.
He brokered the Transition Agreement in November 2011, facilitated the conclusion of the National Dialogue Conference in January 2014 and mediated the Peace and National Partnership Agreement in September 2014.
His latest efforts included the chairing and facilitation of all-inclusive negotiations, which were interrupted by the dramatic surge in violence.
After the Houthi rebels captured key cities and demanded the resignation of the president and government, a coalition led by Saudi Arabia launched air strikes on the insurgents.
Ban Ki-moon reminded that even before the latest escalation of hostilities, two out of three Yemenis relied on humanitarian assistance.
Hundreds have been killed in Yemen and deliveries of humanitarian assistance were blocked, while UNICEF recently estimated that one third of fighters in the country were children.
The Secretary-General pointed to the UN-supported diplomatic process as the best way out of the conflict.
The UN reassured that it will continue its efforts on relaunching the peace process and returning the country back on the track of political transition.
