A bus and a truck with a petrol tanker attached crashed in Morocco, killing 31 people, including young school children.

Local authorities further reported that another nine people have been injured in the southern city of Tan-Tan, the BBC reported.

The tragic accident occurred on the road between Morocco's capital Rabat and Laayoune in the Western Sahara region. Many of people on board of the bus were school children who were going to a national sports competition.

The collision between the two vehicles had been followed by a ''terrible explosion'' that is also believed to have caused the high death rate.

Local media reminded that road accidents in Morocco had been on the rise ever since car ownership more than doubled in the country over the past 15 years. Currently, an average of 10 people lose their lives daily on the roads of one of Africa's most developed regions.
