At least four people died at the Palace of Justice in Milan after a shooting took place on Thursday.

According to the president of Milan's appeals court Giovanni Canzio, a defendant in a bankruptcy case opened fire at the entrance of the courthouse, ANSA news agency reports.

The shooter, who has been identified as Claudio Giardiello, has been arrested at Vimercate near Monza after attempting to flee the scene by a motorbike.

According to media reports, bankruptcy judge Fernando Ciampi, who has been identified as one of the victims, was killed in his office..

Another of the victims was lawyer Lorenzo Alberto Claris Appiani.

The third victim had no signs of being shot and it is likely that he died of heart attack during the incident.

The fourth victim was Giorgio Erba, who died of his wounds after having been admitted to hospital in critical condition.

Erba and Davide Limongelli were defendants in the same bankruptcy case as the alleged perpetrator Giardiello.

Limongelli was also wounded in the shooting.
