New Oil Slick Nears Spanish Shore

Fierce winds off north-west Spain are pushing about 9,000 tons of heavy fuel from a sunken tanker towards the coastline. According to some reports, the fuel - which is the largest slick yet to have escaped from the Prestige tanker - is now just 22 kilometres (12 miles) from the shore of the province of Galicia. Thousands of tons of the oil have already come ashore since the tanker started leaking more than two weeks ago, fouling more than 100 beaches and forcing a fishing ban along 400 km of coastline.
