Nearly 1 million people in Bulgaria at 3516 enterprises worked 14.5 million hours of overtime in 2014, according to statistics of the General Labor Inspectorate Executive Agency.

The largest amount of overtime exceeding the statutory 40 hours per week or eight hours per day norm was reported by medical workers.

In 2014, a total of 34 773 hospital workers worked 1 776 234 extra hours, according to the General Labor Inspectorate Executive Agency, as cited by investor.bg.

Security guards at private companies which did not use technical security systems were second in the overtime ranking with 742 156 hours worked by 19 889 people.

The last category in the top three were drivers of public transport vehicles with 543 144 hours worked by 8225 people.
Bulgaria’s Labor Code bans overtime.

It is only admissible in exceptional cases such as work related to national defense, disaster management and prevention, urgent repair works related to water/power/heating supply and transport and communications, medical care services, urgent repairs of machines, urgent seasonal work etc.

Overtime cannot exceed 150 hours per year.

On a monthly basis, overtime cannot exceed 30 hours of daytime work or 20 hours of nighttime work.

The weekly overtime threshold is 6 hours of daytime work and 4 hours of nighttime work.

Over two consecutive days, overtime cannot exceed 3 hours of daytime work and 2 hours of nighttime work.

Overtime pay is agreed between the employer and the employee, with statutory minimum thresholds applicable to the different cases.
