About 2,000 people have been evacuated from buildings in central London on Wednesday afternoon due to fire suspected to have started among underground electrical cables in Holborn, according to British media reports.

No-one is believed to be injured, The Telegraph said.

The Metropolitan Police declared a major incident after blocks housing offices as well as part of the London School of Economics were cleared by the emergency services.

Fire crews were called after thick black smoke was seen billowing up from a manhole cover in Kingsway, in Holborn, shortly after 1230 BST, according to dailymail.co.uk.

Seventy firefighters were at the scene, the London Fire Brigade has said. People were seen streaming out of offices,cafes, shops and  restaurants in the area.

The LFB  said the fire can’t be extinguished before electric current is switched off. The service is working with utility companies to find the source of the blaze.
