Bulgaria's capital Sofia was awarded on Tuesday for the third time the title the “Best City to Live In” for 2014.

The title was presented by Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev to Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova, Darik radio reports.

This was the eight edition of the “Best City to Live In” annual competition, which is organised by Darik radio and 24 Chasa daily.

Sofia was awarded two more titles – high-tech city and the special prize of the National Palace of Culture (NDK), where the ceremony took place, for most bright city in the field of culture.

According to the audience of Darik, the best city to live in 2014 was Ruse, while the readers of 24 Chasa declared Plovdiv as the best city to live in.

As in previous years, there were special prizes in several different categories, with Plovdiv awarded as business city, Hisarya as the greenest city, while Stara Zagora was declared the most prospective.

Harmanli was designated as a hero city after the town successfully managed with the refugee wave, which affected it.

Primorsko was proclaimed the best party city, while Asenovgrad was deemed the most beautiful city.

Burgas was declared the city with the best sport infrastructure, while Veliko Tarnovo was awarded the title of most historical city.

In the 2014 edition, 27 district cities participated, which were assessed on 31 criteria, among them state of the environment, level of investments, birth rate, unemployment rate, etc.

Until now four cities have been awarded the “Best City to Live In” titleSofia, Varna, Burgas and Veliko Tarnovo.

Last year, Burgas and Veliko Tarnovo were the joint winners, which represented the first time that there were two holders of the title.
