As many as 11 customs office employees and three border police officials have been detained at Bulgaria's Kapitan Andreevo border crossing on Monday evening, Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Georgi Kostov has confirmed.

The special operation has been carried out after officers allowed truckloads of cigarettes of be smuggled into the country, according to private national NOVA TV station.

There were 16 trucks of cigarettes some of which were halted in Bulgaria's second-biggest city Plovdiv, with a Turkish driver also being arrested. Local district prosecutors are already working on the affair, Kostov told the Bulgarian National Radio.

Daily Trud quoted Prime Minister Boyko Borisov as alleging that on holidays there are "entire shifts of customs and border police officials who worked as an organized criminal gang," an activity that in his words was had been reported by "our colleagues from Turkey."
