A Bulgarian man living in Houlton, US ha been accused of sending emails containing death threats to "a member of the European Commission", local media reports suggest.

According to The Sun Journal, Dushko Detelinov Vulchev, 38, allegedly wrote an email "to a Bulgarian economist and administrator who is a member of the European Commission".

On Monday Vulchev, a naturalized citizen, attended a court sitting on the case following an investigation that began in February.

He is said to have demanded jobs for Bulgarians in Europe, demanding from the receiver of his email to have a full list of "all Bulgarians who live in Portugal and England" and "to hire in Europe as much Bulgarians as possible."

"I give you two weeks, I will slit your throats, I will hang you like I did in Paris", another message reads.

"I will kill you like chickens", he is quoted as writing in Bulgarian and in capital letters. The text was translated for the by Bulgaria's Special Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP).

So far Vulchev has not yet been indicted, but on Sunday was arrested after authorities found out he was intending to fly to Bulgaria.

If convicted, he could spend up to five years behind bars and could be imposed a fine of up to USD 250 000.

The Sun Journal's story does not contain names of threatened EU officials.

Bulgarian news website Dnevnik.bg, however, argues the target of Vulchev's death threats was Bulgarian EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, who is he Commission's Vice President for Budget and Human Resources.
