About 200 Bulgarians assisting in the construction of a photovoltaic power system are currently affected by the torrential rains hitting Chile in the last few days.

At least two people have died and 24 have been reported missing as a result of the floods, with roads sealed off and power supply disrupted.

"Here in the Atacama desert there is a state of emergency over the heavy downpours. There are about 200 Bulgarians taking part in the construction of a photovoltaic central, a Bulgarian named Ivan Dodurov, has told private national NOVA TV station."

Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry has not yet officially commented on the situation of the Bulgarian group.

Torrential rains are not typical for the usually arid region and caught Chile's government off-guard this week. The country's President Michelle Bachelet arrived in the affected regions to oversee how the floods are being tackled.
