Bulgaria will receive EUR 10 M in EU funding to support its asylum, migration and integration policies over the period 2014-2020.

This became clear after the European Commission approved on Wednesday 22 new multiannual national programmes, amounting to a total of EUR 1.8 B, for the 2014-2020 period. The approved national programmes include 17 under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and five under the Internal Security Fund (ISF).

An additional 36 national programmes will be approved later this year, the press service of the European Commission informs.

Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said that migration is one of the ten priorities of the Juncker Commission.

Avramopoulos added that making migration policy work is essential for the societies of the member states and assured that the European Commission is to continue to support them.

AMIF supports national efforts to improve reception capacities, enhance the quality of asylum procedures, integrate migrants and increase the sustainability of return programmes.

ISF finances projects on improving border management, enhancing cross-border law enforcement cooperation and strengthening member states' capacity to manage security-related risk.

The European Commission is working towards approving the remaining national programmes under the two funds, which have a total budget of almost EUR 7 B for the 2014-2020 period.
