Search and rescue teams recovered one of the black boxes of the Germanwings airplane, which crashed over the French Alps on Tuesday.

The Airbus A320 was conducting flight 4U 9525 from Barcelona to Dusseldorf, when it crashed between Digne and Barcelonnette after an eight-minute descent, killing all 150 people on board.

Among the victims are believed to be 16 school children, who were returning from an exchange trip, as well as two babies.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, but the recovery of the flight data recorder will aid investigators to establish it.

Terrorism has been dismissed as a likely cause of the crash and the plane did not send a distress signal, the BBC reports.

The search and rescue operation is likely to take longer than usual due to the remoteness of the crash site.
