Bulgaria: Romania’s Anticorruption Chief Resigns File photo

The head of Romania’s National Agency for Integrity (ANI) Horia Georgescu resigned on accusations of abuse of office during his tenure at the Central Commission for Compensations.

Georgescu handed his resignation, which is going to be registered at the Cabinet of the Romanian Senate President later on Tuesday, AGERPRES news agency reports.

The resignation came under his own initiative, as he did not want to compromise the image of ANI in any way.

Georgescu was detained by prosecutors of Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) on Monday, when he was heard about his tenure as member of the Central Commission for Compensations.

He is accused of abuse of office with extremely serious consequences with the prejudice under this file amounting to EUR 75 M.

DNA was informed in January that in the period 2008-2009 the evaluation reports of buildings for which compensation was awarded did not comply with international standards on estimating the market value of the buildings.
