The executive committee of Bulgaria's main ruling party GERB has decided that the party will compete in the forthcoming local elections on its own.
The chairperson of GERB's parliamentary group Tsvetan Tsvetanov announced this on Saturday prior to the party's national council in Plovdiv, private bTV station reports.
Tsvetanov added that at present the party has 94 mayors and 1601 municipal councilors and he expects that GERB will improve its record at the forthcoming elections.
According to him, this was an achievable goal, as he was convinced that some of GERB's mayors have managed to extend their support and will attract voters from other parties.
In his words, instructions have already been sent to all party structures, so that the nominations for municipal councilors and mayors could be discussed.
Tsvetanov pointed that certain nominations will be discussed with the junior coalition partners from the Reformist Bloc (RB), but GERB's principal position was to contest the elections on its own.
GERB's mayors, MPs, ministers and district coordinators are gathering on Saturday in Plovdiv to discuss the party's preparation for the local elections in the autumn.
Nearly 450 GERB and 300 RB activists are convening in Plovdiv on Saturday and Sunday in order to receive instructions on the forthcoming local elections.
