At least 21 people died and nearly 50 are missing after a ferry capsized in northwestern Myanmar due to high waves.

According to officials, rescuers saved 167 people from the sea and helped them to safety, ABC news reports.

The Aung Tagun 3 sank near the town of Myebon in the Rakhine State late on Friday, the Ministry of Information stated.

Boat accidents are common in Myanmar's river deltas and coastal reasons and are usually caused by overcrowding and bad weather.

People rely on boat transport because it is more affordable and many areas are inaccessible by roads.
