The European Parliament has moved to lift the immunity of Sergey Stanishev, a former Bulgarian PM and current leader of the Party of European Socialists (PES).

Stanishev earlier reported that he had requested the European Parliament to take the step in a fast-track procedure.

The former PM is facing charges at home, but could not be indicted due to his immunity as a lawmaker.

Bulgaria's Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov earlier demanded that Stanishev's immunity be revoked so that the former Prime Minister can face a trial on lost secret files that has been pending for a few years. The case misfired for a third time in a row in September of 2014 since Stanishev had already become MEP at the time.

Stanishev made clear on Wednesday he wanted to have his reputation cleared of the scandal.

You can find more about the trial here.
