Two skiers have been hit by an avalanche in Bulgaria's Pirin mountain, 24 Chasa daily reported on Sunday.

The two were skiing outside marked ski runs near Yavorov Hut in defiance of the avalanche alert issued by the mountain rescue service.

A search operation has been launched by the rescue team in the town of Razlog.

Meanwhile, a snowboarder who also was sliding down the slope outside marked areas and got lost in Demyanitsa Valley earlier on Sunday, has been found. He is being transported to safety, 24 Chasa said.

The mountain rescue service has warned skiers and snowboarders of very high avalanche danger. New snow that has fallen over the past three days following a period of warmer weather is one metre thick in Pirin. Sunday's dense fog and blizzards high up in the mountains make it extremely dangerous to venture outside, the mountain rescue service has warned
