At least nine people were killed after a shooting took place in the town of Uhersky Brod in the eastern part of the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

According to Czech state television, an armed man burst into a restaurant and started shooting, the BBC reported.

The suspected gunman has also been killed, Czech Interior Minister Milan Chovanec said.

According to a Reuters report, the minister told Czech news agency CTK that the "suspected shooter" was also dead, bringing the death toll from the incident to at least nine.

Uhersky Brod Mayor Patrik Kuncar said the gunman, around 60 years old, was a local citizen. According to Kuncar the gunman was acting alone and is believed to have been mentally unstable.

Uhersky Brod is about 300 kilometres southeast of Prague.

The motives for the attack remain unclear.

Czech Television said the attacker fired about 25 rounds. At least 20 people are believed to have been in the restaurant at the time of the attack, which took place around lunchtime.

One injured woman was taken to hospital with shot wounds and in a serious condition, according to CTK.
