Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has accepted the resignation of Gen. Stoyan Tonev, the head of the Health Commission in parliament and former chief of Sofia-based Military Hospital, 24 Chasa daily reported on Tuesday.

Tonev, suspected of alleged wrongdoing while he had headed the Military Hospital back in 2004, has resigned both as head of the Health Commission and member of Parliament from Borisov’s governing GERB party.

In a letter to Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva Tonev explained he was resigning from Parliament due to “increased public interest” and in order to ensure “independent investigation by the Prosecutors Office and the National Audit Office”.

“I personlally informed the Chief Prosecutor and the Chairman of the Audit Office yesterday, calling for a comprehensive inspection to be conducted. In those letters I call for the ascertaining of the legality of management and the way contracts had been concluded during the period 28 August 2002 – 1 January 2015,” Tonev said in his letter to Tsacheva.

“I believe this is the only way to safeguard the authority of Bilgaria’s biggest health institution of national importance as well as of special importance in cases of war and natural disasters, and to have my name cleared.”

An internal audit conducted by the Defence Ministry had discovered alleged misappropriation of funds at the Clinic of Dermatology at the Military Hospital during Gen. Tonev’s tenure.

Private bTV station reported on Monday Borisov had demanded Tonev's resignation from all offces held in GERB.
