The latest figures of Eurostat, which were released on Tuesday, reveal that Bulgaria had the second lowest inflation rate in the EU in January – minus 2.3 %.

The data show that only Greece had a lower inflation rate than Bulgaria, which stood at minus 2.8 %.

The EU average stood at minus 0.5 %, which is a further decrease from December 2014, when it amounted to minus 0.1 %.

In January, 23 of the EU member states registered negative inflation rates, with only Malta, Austria, Romania, Sweden and the UK recording a positive rate.

Compared with December 2014, annual inflation rates fell in all EU member states, except Cyprus, Malta and Sweden.

The annual inflation rate in the Euro area experienced a further drop from its December 2014 value, decreasing to minus 0.6 % in January 2015.

This is the lowest annual inflation rate registered in the Euro area since July 2009.

The most significant downward impact to Euro area inflation came from fuels for transport, heating oil and telecommunications, while restaurants, cafes, rents and tobacco caused the largest upward impacts.
