The Patriotic Front (PF), one of the parties supporting the coalition government, demands the introduction of compulsory voting in Bulgaria prior to the forthcoming local elections in the autumn.

The PF will initiate amendments to the Election Code to ensure compulsory voting is introduced for the local elections, daily Dnevnik reports.

This was announced by MP Boris Yachev, following the meeting between representatives of his party and Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev on Tuesday.

The meeting was part of the “month of political consultations”, which was initiated by Plevneliev on Monday.

The PF commented the introduction of compulsory voting after the holding of a referendum together with the forthcoming local elections, as an an attempt for its postponement.

As regards the introduction of majority voting, which has also been proposed for inclusion in a referendum by the President, the PF expressed opposition.

The PF was also opposed to the introduction of electronic voting, justifying its stance with the unpreparedness of Bulgarian society.

Yachev also commented that the cabinet's governance programme lacked concrete deadlines , which would commit the government to implementing certain priorities.

The PF pointed that there were serious delays in the energy sector, where audits were still not taking place.

The party also commented that the reforms in the judicial system were experiencing a similar delay.
