The projected route of Bulgaria’s Hemus motorway in the area of Veliko Tarnovo will be changed to facilitate easier connection to a new motorway that would link the city with the Danube port of Ruse, at the border with Romania.

The new route will bring Hemus within 15 kilometres of Veliko Tarnovo, near the village of Polikraishte, instead of 28 kilometres planned earlier, Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova said on Monday.

The change to initial plans for the construction of Hemus motorway that will connect Sofia with the Black Sea port of Varna has been called for by the need to build a large junction at which Hemus will link to the planned Ruse-Veliko Tarnovo motorway.

Both motorways are parts of EU-defined transport corridors.

Considering that everything possible should be done to attract tourists and the transit traffic of motor vehicles to and from Romania and use the opportunities offered by the airport in the town of Gorna Oryahovitsa near Veliko Tarnovo, the government believes the change to the route of Hemus is economically justified, said Pavlova.

The government will be seeking financing for the construction of the two motorways from the European Investment Bank or the Investment Plan of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, she said.

Financing under a public-private partnership deal is also possible.
