Plovdiv won in the category Re-establishing the Image of Bulgaria as a Tourist Destination at the forum Vacation and Spa Expo 2015, held in Sofia on February 12 to 14.
Plovdiv's Mayor Ivan Totev stated that the city is the only one in Bulgaria to show a double-digit increase in the percentage of hotel bookings for 2014 - 18.27%. Additionally, the number of international tourists has increased by 30%, as stated by the Plovdiv Press Office.
Over 20 foreign and 250 local tourist attractions took part in the forum, including 50 Bulgarian municipalities and information centers.
All of them were invited to the Sixth annual international meeting of tour operators to be held in Plovdiv between 22 and 25 April.The event has more than 150 confirmed guests from all over the world.
In 2014 Plovdiv won the title of European Capital of Culture.
The city also achieved a significant recognition after it was listed among the ten must-see locations in the world in the Lonely Planet travel publisher.
It was also featured in the Rough Guide online publication with the article Ten Reasons to Visit Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The electronic guidebook provides tourists with first-hand experiences of destinations across the world.
Plovdiv will also host the INDEX 2015 forum in June 2015. The forum is established as the biggest professional event on tourism, with this being the first time the event is held in Eastern Europe.
