Following the earlier agreed ceasefire in Minsk, the extension of sanctions against Russia will most likely be dropped from the agenda of the informal meeting of the European Council on Thursday.

EU High Representative Federica Mogherini said that she expected no further sanctions against Russia to be discussed at the meeting of heads of state or government, the Moscow Times reports.

Mogherini revealed that the most likely issue to dominate the European Council summit was the means through which the EU could facilitate the implementation of the Minsk ceasefire agreement.

The EU delayed the imposition of new sanctions, which had been previously agreed, making their extension dependent on the outcome of the negotiations in Minsk.

During marathon negotiations of the so-called Normandy format, a ceasefire was finally agreed in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, which should begin at midnight on February 15.
