Bulgaria is situated right between Nepal and the Republic of Congo in the report on world press freedom, published in 2015. Meanwhile, Greece, Kosovo and Albania score slightly higher, but are in the same group of countries with moderately dependent press.

The report indicated a drop in the ranking of Bulgaria, currently on the 106th spot, from the 100th place it took in 2014.

The list of free press countries outlined in the report include Germany, Austria, Poland, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

Meanwhile, China, Vietnam, Cuba and Yemen scored at the bottom of the chart

The report, based on the world press freedom is published annually by Reporters Without Borders. The organization is said to defend freedom of information and is an official consultant to UNESCO and the United Nations.

The index itself is said to represent the degree of freedom of Internet users, journalists and news media across 180 countries.

Calculations are based on the results received from surveys to be completed by journalists, researchers, jurists and human rights defenders on their perception of freedom in various countries. 

Seven criteria are used to in the survey - pluralism, media dependence, environment and censorship, legislative framework, transparency, infrastructure and abuses.
