The number of commuters using the underground railway system in Sofia are expected to increase by 25,000 a day when the new Vitosha Station opens next year, city mayor Yordanka Fandakova said on Friday.
The station is being built at the intersection of Tcherni Vrah Boulevard and Srebarna Street in Sofia’s southern Lozenets neighbourhood. It lies at the southward end of an extension to the Blue Line of Sofia metro.
The total cost of the new segment will amount to BGN 42.3 M, or BGN 16.6 M per kilometer.
With its seven entrances Vitosha Station will be the biggest one so far in the underground railway network of Bulgaria’s capital.
Sofia Metro curently carries about 320,000 commuters a day.
Fandakova and Sofia Metro Director Stoyan Bratoev on Thursday inspected construction work on the extension and said it would be completed on schedule by June 2016. So far, 20% of construction work has been completed.
The project is funded through the Operational Programme Transport of the European Commission.
