Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office has decided to drop the charges against former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov regarding the use of surveillance practices.
The official accusation stated that Tsvetanov and his underlings had not used the authority to impose monitoring on criminal suspects.
However, after a law amendment from June 2014, surveillance could be imposed only in times of war, during military action or foreign missions.
Supervising prosecutor on the case Chavdar Angelov explained that when the lawsuit was filed, the amendment had not yet been effective, however currently there is no legal basis for the case to continue, BGNES reported.
Angelov further explained that according to a Bulgarian Criminal Code directive, in all suits the more favorable for the accused practice should be implemented.
Currently, there are three lawsuits against Tsvetanov - on embezzlement charges, malfeasance in office, and on crimes against the justice system.
Meanwhile, the Sofia Appellate Court will decide whether to drop the 4-year sentence of the former Interior Minister over crimes against the justice system in about a month.
