Bulgaria’ Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova has insisted that the government and environmentalists can reach joint decisions on ski tourism development.

In a Monday interview for the Bulgarian National Television, she underscored that a decision that had been reached through dialogue was certain to be the right one.

Angelkova pointed out that ski tourism was important because it attracted high-end tourists.

She said that she was working with ski racing legend Marc Girardeli, adviser of the Tourism Minister on issues of winter tourism, on analyses of the experience of European countries.

Angelkova announced that a concept paper drafted by Girardeli would be presented soon, with a discussion on it scheduled to take place in March with the participation of experts from Italy, France, Switzerland, and all other interested parties.

She vowed that any new projects would be implemented in line with domestic and EU law.

Angelkova, as cited by dnevnik.bg, was adamant that Bulgaria needed to focus on a certain type of tourist services that it wished to offer, adding that the country could not possibly “offer everything to everybody.”

She argued that Bulgaria had to become a year-round tourist destination, developing ski tourism, sea tourism, and cultural-historical tourism.

Bulgaria’s Tourism Minister suggested that the main problems of Black Sea resorts were shortcomings in the spheres of infrastructure and security, the lack of a common vision, and the uncertain legal status.

She said that it was important to find a legislative solution that would allow the owners of resorts to be beneficiaries under EU operational program, stressing that the issue had already been discussed by a working group at the ministry.

Angelkova assured that Bulgaria would participate in all tourism expos in 2015.

She also made clear that the country’s advertisement strategy would change, with summer resorts being advertised in winter and ski resorts in summer.
