The “Great Return” home begins as the end of the holiday season approaches in Bulgaria, with heavy traffic expected both on Saturday and Sunday.

Around 560 000 Bulgarians have traveled within the country for the holidays, with further 400 000 going abroad, private bTV station and electronic daily Dnevnik report.

The majority of the travels were connected with the visits of families, relatives and friends as well as trips to the main tourist destinations, primarily the ski and spa resorts.

Traffic police warns drivers to depart earlier and not wait until the last moment, allowing themselves an ample amount of time as weather conditions can slow them down.

Yellow code for strong wind was issued for the whole of Northern Bulgaria as well as the districts of Plovdiv and Pazardzhik on Saturday and it will remain in force for most of the country on Sunday.

While there will be almost no precipitations on Saturday, rain will begin to fall on Sunday which will quickly turn into snow.

The formation of black ice is possible on Sunday, so drivers have to be cautious and depart earlier.

Between 300 000 and 400 000 vehicles are expected to return to Sofia.
