Only 31 % of Bulgarians identify themselves as being happy in 2014, which is almost twice less than the share of Eastern Europeans who declare happiness.
This becomes evident of the WIN/Gallup International's annual global end of year survey which was published on Tuesday.
Although the survey shows that happiness is on the rise in 2014, with 70 % of people worldwide declaring happiness, this is not the case in Bulgaria.
The majority of Bulgarians – 49 % feel neither happy nor unhappy, 15 % are unhappy, while 4 % refuse to answer.
Although more people are happy than unhappy, Bulgaria is markedly unhappier when compared to its fellow countries from the region of Eastern Europe.
The majority of Eastern Europeans – 58 % declare themselves as happy, 33 % are neither happy nor unhappy, while 6 % are unhappy.
Although the share of happy people have increased with 10 % worldwide from last year, only 42 % believe that the next year will be economically prosperous for their country.
Fiji is the country with the happiest population in the world – with 93 % of the people declaring themselves as happy.
Iraq is the least happy country in the world with more than a third (31 %) feeling unhappy.
Africa and Asia are most confident that 2015 will be better than 2014, with respectively 75 % and 63 % of the people expressing such belief.
Only 12 % of Western Europeans think that 2015 will be an year of economic prosperity.
Three out of five people worldwide would go to war for their country, with the region of the Middle East and North Africa possessing the highest share of such people – 77 %, which is a marked contrast from the quarter in Western Europe.
The share of unhappy people worldwide has decreased from 12 % in 2013 to 6 % in 2014.
The share of people who are neither happy nor unhappy remains at similar levels – 23 % this year compared to 26 % last year.
Africa seems to be the happiest region with 83 % of respondents giving a positive answer, followed by Asia with 77 %.
Finland is the happiest country in Western and Eastern Europe, with 80 % of the people declaring themselves as being happy.
The unhappiest country in Eastern and Western Europe is Greece, where 24 % of the people are unhappy, which is not surprising in view of the recent economic hardship the country has experienced.
