The Director of Border Police Zaharin Penov has resigned due to the accident with the truck carrying border police officers that overturned on Friday and resulted in the death of the driver.

This was announced by the Interior Minister Veselin Vuchkov following a meeting with the trade unions on Monday, which had demanded resignations in line with the accident.

Vuchkov said that he took a decision to accept Penov's resignation, which had been deposited two days ago, the Bulgarian National Radio reports.

Following the meeting with the trade unions, it became clear that three reports on the state of the Bulgarian-Turkish border were tabled at the Council of Ministers on the last working day before Christmas.

The reports request the recall of all patrols on foot at the Bulgarian-Turkish border and their replacement with auto-patrols.

The reports also call for completion of the construction of the wall between Bulgaria and Turkey and the creation of good infrastructure in five municipalities at the Bulgarian-Turkish border.

Vuchkov said that the government is expected to decide on 700 appointments at Border Police, who are to replace the police officers that are currently posted to the border from all parts of the country.

The Interior Minister ordered the withdrawal of patrols on foot from the dangerous sections of the Bulgarian-Turkish border on Friday.

At the end of 2013, 1000 police officers were posted to the border from the interior of the country, in order to protect the border from the wave of refugees, electronic daily Dnevnik reminds.
