Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolay Nenchev has attended a memorial service for the 5 Bulgarian rangers killed in Kerbala, Iraq.

The memorial service was held at St-Nicholas's Church in Pleven, according to reports of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.

On December 27, 2003, between 12:45 and 1 pm local time, suicide bombers using automobiles loaded with explosives, conducted three attacks in the Iraqi city of Kerbala.

One of the blasts killed 5 Bulgarian rangers and injured 27.

Those who died on their duty post were Captain Georgi Kachorin, Senior Lieutenant Nikolay Saraev, Senior Sargent Ivan Indzhov, Junior Sargent Anton Petrov, and Private Svilen Kirov.

Nenchev told journalists on Saturday that the authorities were doing their best to ensure the safety of Bulgarian soldiers, adding that the country was part of the “most intelligent and best-prepared union called NATO.”

He noted that Bulgaria’s mission in Afghanistan consisted of 110 members.

Nenchev also vowed army reforms in 2015.

He said that the vacancies for army officers were very worrying but suggested that a solution to the problem had been drafted.
