Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Bulgaria could be heading for a new snap poll unless the main ruling party, center-right GERB, distances itself from the nationalist formation supporting the cabinet, a key political leader has warned.
Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has to set himself free of the "xenophobic" stone that is the Patriotic Front (PF), Darik Radio quotes Lyutvi Mestan, who heads the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), as saying.
Mestan has made clear he is not posing a political ultimatum to the government.
In his words, the PF has formed a "mini-coalition" with the rightist Reformist Bloc (RB), GERB's junior partner in the ruling minority coalition.
Mestan has dubbed this alleged tacit alliance a "Deformist Bloc" in reference to the RB's constant calls for reform also reflected in the right-wing coalition's name.
DPS itself was the junior coalition partner in Bulgaria's previous elected government.
In June Mestan declared the cabinet, where center-left Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) was the mandate-bearer, could not make its full term in office, just over a year after the government had been sworn in and just days after the BSP had shown a weak performance at the European elections.
The coalition resigned the next month, but many pointed to Mestan's remarks as the de-facto end of its term in office.
