Bulgaria: Ecological Crisis Looms Ahead as Bulgaria’s 2 Rendering Plants Face Closure Photo by BGNES

Bulgaria faces ecological crisis as the only two rendering plants in the country are about to stop functioning.

The reason behind the step is the fact that the contracts of the two plants with the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency have not been renewed.

The Shumen-based rendering plant, Bramas – 96 AD, which is the biggest one in the country and services 18 districts, stops working on Monday.

The contract of the rendering plant with the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency expired at the end of last week.

The signing of a new contract usually takes at least a month and the procedure has not even been launched, according to representatives of the Shumen-based plant, as cited by Darik radio.

Most of the workers of the Shumen-based rendering plant will be forced to go on a leave of absence as of Monday.

The situation at the Varna-based rendering plant, which services 10 districts, is said to be the same.

The two rendering plants also face serious financial problems as the debt of the state to them runs into millions.

The Agriculture Ministry has assured that the obligations to the two rendering plants will be settled in full in early 2015.
