Sofia’s budget for 2015 totals BGN 1.4 B with a capital program of BGN 700 M, according to Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova.

In an interview for 24 Hours daily, Fandakova explains that EU funding accounts for over 50% of the total.

“In 2015, the waste treatment plant will be ready. We will also launch the subway sections to Sofia Airport and to Business Park Sofia. As a result, there will be subway connection between Sofia Airport and the Sofia Central Railway Station and the Sofia Central Bus Station. An extra 90 000 people will be able to use the fastest and most convenient mode of urban transport,” the Sofia Mayor says.

She underscores that repairs of boulevards and sidewalks, as well as street lighting, run parallel to the subway construction activities.

Fandakova points out that the Alexander Malinov boulevard is to be expanded to the Tsarigradsko Shose boulevard.

She says that the construction of the subway section to Srebarna Street is ongoing and she expects that work on the third subway line, which is to be completed with EU funding, will begin in 2015.

She informs that 5 kindergartens are to be completed and the construction of 8 more is to be launched in 2015, against the background of a total of 19 kindergartens built in 2014.

Fandakova explains that the investments have been made possible by financial discipline, increased tax collection rates, and EU funding.

She notes that the planned repairs at the boulevards Tsarigradsko Shose, Dondukov, Montevideo, Kableshkov, Vitosha, and Slivnitsa are considered priority projects for 2015.

She reminds that five 2-level intersections have been built recently to alleviate traffic congestion in Sofia, adding that the efforts are producing positive results, adding that the number of cars is increasing on a daily basis.

Fandakova informs that the construction of new bike lanes in 2015 will continue.

She says that it is too early to say if she will run for a new term in office as Sofia Mayor.
