The Bulgarian government will propose to the European Union to finance the construction of a gas hub at the entrance of the South Stream pipeline on Bulgarian territory, from which the Russian raw material is to be distributed to the other European countries.

The idea of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has been discussed and approved by the other Ministers at the meeting of the Cabinet on Wednesday, electronic daily Dnevnik reports.

The Deputy Prime Minister for absorption of EU funds and economic policy Tomislav Donchev has been entrusted with the task of sending a letter with the proposal to the Vice-President of the European Commission for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic.

The reason for this is the participation of Sefcovic at the meeting of the Energy Ministers of the EU member states participating in the construction of South Stream, that was held on Tuesday.

According to Borisov, there is no reason that Bulgaria's proposal will receive a refusal, unless the EU is hypocritical.

The Prime Minister said that nobody could convince him that the gas flowing through Turkey was good, but when it reached Bulgaria it became bad.

Borisov also warned that Bulgaria should not be creating the illusions that it strictly complies with the Third Energy Package, as it can not be guaranteed that Greece and Macedonia will do so.

According to him, gas extracted from Bulgarian fields could also flow to the proposed hub.

Borisov expressed his confidence that there is no weakness in his position and demanded that letters should be prepared to Sefcovic and the President of the European Council Donald Tusk, as he was the man behind the common energy union.

The Prime Minister opined that Bulgaria could help Russia build the pipeline without having any commitments before it reaches the Bulgarian border.

From there the raw material could be distributed under the supervision of the European Commission and in line with the common energy union.
Tomislav Donchev, who participated at the meeting with Sefcovic, has to obtain a concrete yes-or-no answer from the EU to the proposal of the Prime Minister.

Donchev added that for Bulgaria the situation is additionally complicated, as the government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski had delegated the negotiations with Russia to the European Commission.
