EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini is due to meet Turkish leaders an an attempt to secure Ankara's support for the fight against Islamic State (IS) and sanctions against Russia.

According to her own Twitter account Mogherini is also to touch the issue of Turkey's EU accession which has been blocked for years now by the stalled negotiation process.

Brussels will demand Ankara's cooperation in identifying foreign fighters who join IS, anonymous sources reportedly told EurActiv.

The country has been reluctant to provide full support to Europe in its push to prevent the flow of foreign fighters via its territory. Turkey has long insisted it is up to Europe to curb the movement of fighters in Syria, with thousands of Europeans known to have reached the country to join IS.

Mogherini's visit comes just a week after the unexpected announcement of Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow was abandoning South Stream in favor of a pipeline through Bulgaria.

The EU High Representative is set to meet Turkish Presidet Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn is also part of the delegation.
