Bulgaria: Nationalists to Keep Supporting Bulgarian Gov't, Get Deputy Minister Seat Patriots will not insist anymore than Orhan Ismailov (in the photo), Deputy Defense Minister, step down. Photo by BGNES

Patriotic Front, a nationalist coalition supporting Bulgaria's minority government, will not withdraw its support for the cabinet.

The coalition will be granted two official positions in return and will be able to send a Deputy Defense Minister to the cabinet and also to have a Deputy Governor of Sofia.

PF's chairmen Valeri Simeonov and Krasimir Karakachanov announced the agreement after meeting representatives of the junior coalition partner Reformist Bloc (RB) in Parliament on Friday.

The PF are now to backtrack on their previous demands that the cabinet should dismiss Orhan Ismailov as Deputy Defense Minister and Veselin Penev as Sofia District Governor.

According to the nationalists, both Ismailov and Penev, whose candidacies were proposed by the People's Freedom and Dignity Party (NPSD) (called by the PF "a pro-Turkish" party within the Reformist Bloc), are actually "Turkish agents".

The PF's support for the government is essential for providing the coalition with a stable parliamentary majority. Not counting the nationalists it comprises political parties with 118 out of 240 MPs, and a decision of PF to quit would have led the government to collapse.

Another concession the RB granted to Patriots is the promise to reschedule the news bulletin broadcast in Turkish on the Bulgarian National Television.
